History

Symphony by Chetola Lake (formerly Symphony by the Lake) first began in 1987. Since then, it has grown to be the centerpiece of the summer season for many High Country residents and visitors. This Symphony is part of a larger tradition of appreciation for the arts for which Blowing Rock is well known. From the works of painter Elliott Dangerfield done a century ago, to a thriving selection of arts events today, the Village of Blowing Rock has long been one that offers both artists and art lovers a retreat in the cool mountain air. This event brings together the beauty of our quaint village and the appreciation of the arts to our High Country residents, tourists, and all attendees.

Held on the grounds of the picturesque Chetola Resort, audiences gather on the lawn with low chairs, blankets, coolers, and picnics, while others opt to purchase a private tent where they enjoy entertaing their guests and clients. Many tents are decorated based on that year's symphony theme and if judged the best decorated, take home an eligant prize.
Some of the previous years themes have been:

  • Movie Soudtracks
  • Fiddle and Fiddleheads
  • Music to Your ARTS Desire
  • A Journey of Imagination
  • From the Alps to the Appalachians
  • Live from Vienna
  • A Celtec Celebration

Around 3,500 patrons relax and enjoy the music performed by The Symphony of the Mountains conducted by Cornelia Laemmli Orth. The orchestra many times will welcome a special guest to their perfomance.  Some of these have been Shadow Grass, The Kruger Brothers and Bristol Lightning. The evening is concluded by a spectacular fireworks display. This lively and entertaining evening is a must on a summer to-do list.
